Have you seen Tesla’s Cybertruck? When do you think this can come to India?

Tesla co-founder and CEO Elon Musk showcased all-electric “Cybertruck” on Thursday in an event in USA by TESLA. There has been lots of expectations among people across the globe for the unique design of the truck and the unique features of the truck. This is the first time when electric vehicle is envisaged and conceptualized in the truck space. The truck space which is dominated by players like Ford and General Motors are looking at these proceedings with utmost attention.

Elon Musk had teased several of the design cues ahead of the event, some of them influenced from Bladerunner to the James Bond movie The Spy Who Loved Me. Both films featured vehicles with sharply angled front ends and overall wedge shapes.

Now the question for people in India, whether the cyber truck or for that matter any of the Tesla cars would ever come to India? Tesla’s cyber truck which is planned to be at a price point of 40K USD would translate close to 30 lakh INR may not be affordable for many Indians. Also the truck which is more relevant in an US context may not be much relevant in Indian context. The model 3 which is a prime vehicle for Tesla may make a lot of sense for Indian market. At a price point in the mid 30 thousand USD range would be close to 25 lakh INR.

Considering many sub standard electric vehicles are coming to the Indian market by companies like Tata, Mahindra and others Tesla’s introduction to Indian market would be a game changer. But it is worth to watch whether government is going to allow Tesla’s movement into the Indian market and how condusive environment they get in India.

Below are some of the very poor quality (at a global scale) electric vehicles in India and there corresponding price (Ex Showroom Price) in India:

  • Mahindra e Verito : Approx 11 lakh INR
  • Tata Tigor EV : Approx 11 lakh INR
  • Mahindra e2oplus : Approx 8 lakhs INR
  • Hyundai Kona Electric : 24 lakhs INR

We can only hope as Indians when companies like Tesla would come to India and we can get the electric vehicles at global standard in India.
